treatments - hygienist treatments

Our dental team works closely with our hygienists to maintain a healthy and comfortable mouth that you can feel confident about. We firmly believe, and as has been shown with many patients, that if your mouth is kept clean the rest will look after itself resulting in fewer dental treatments and less cost.

Our Hygienists are fully trained and have been specifically recruited because they are highly experienced in their field. As well as providing routine hygiene, due to the advanced treatments we provide, all our hygienists have further postgraduate training for the more complex and advanced periodontal cases.

We recommend 3 to 6 monthly hygienist visits. For more information please book an appointment with one of our hygienists.

Why you need to see a Dental Hygienist?

Do your gums bleed when you brush your teeth? Do you ever feel like you have bad breath or an unpleasant taste? These symptoms are indicators of gum disease.

The fact is that many people neglect their gums, and without healthy gums perfectly good teeth can be lost. It's not generally known that after 40 years of age, more teeth are lost through gum disease than through decay. These days most people intend to keep their natural teeth for life; however, without healthy gums, dentures (false teeth) are the likely long term eventuality.

The hygienist will examine your teeth and gums for signs of disease and assess the severity of the disease. She will assess how much plaque and tartar you have on your teeth and under your gums. She will remove the tartar, as well as any stains and left over plaque that remains by polishing your teeth. When the deposits are completely removed, she will educate you on how to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

What is a dental hygienist?

A dental hygienist is a dental professional who works together with the dentist and specializes in the detection and prevention of gum disease and tooth decay and the treatment of gum disease.

What is the difference between a dentist and a dental hygienist?

A dental hygienist is employed by a dentist to maintain healthy gums and teeth in order to maintain an overall healthy mouth. Hygienists generally have 2 -3 years university education in order to specialize only in the area of gum care. A dentist on the other hand does not receive the same training.

Why do I need to see a dental hygienist?

If you are not regularly seeing a dental hygienist your gums will not be as healthy as they should be and you will have a build up of plaque (soft deposits) and tartar (hard deposits) on your teeth. A hygienist is a specialist in removing these deposits, maintaining healthy gums and educating you to maintain a good standard of dental health.

It has been shown that the healthier the gums are the less problems you have with your teeth , which means less dental treatment, resulting in lower dental bills.
